The day we landed

The kids have been pretty excited for weeks. Holiday only starting this week but we are going to have it early. 

Here we are! Back to the city of Kuching! Had an early flight yesterday morning and in no time, we were ushered to breakfast. It was Sunday so everywhere was packed or not open due to Mid-Autumn. Ended up in one of the coffee shop in Jln Sekama.

An Ipoh noodle which I used to go. Loved its roasted meat!

Jamie was super excited and missed his nap just to explore around the house. Took me long time to make him nap.

Glad my mum and sis helped in keeping the house clean and my mini garden still surviving till today!

It is Mid-Autumn festival today. We got this mooncake set from hubby's staff. Lovely  mooncake box and interesting flavours. Hmm. Which one should we eat first?

New place to dine

A very warm Monday with not a single drop of rain in Sibu.  We went for our grocery shopping after our dim sum, then hide in our house for nap. By evening, the temperature was still warm.

So we went to this Ming Mei Shi seafood restaurant as I knew it is an air-con enclosure. My sil told me this place is not only serve good food but it has economy rice for lunch, which is good. Maybe I will tapau for lunch one of these days.

As for our dinner that night, we had its stir fried potato leaves..

and stir fried midin.

The captain recommended this Foochow fish with preserved vegetable soup and I remembered reading the review from Suituapui. Very different and we liked it very much.

and I ordered this butter prawns which were good. But I still prefer my prawns in whole, with skins and heads intact.

Lastly we tried its roasted chicken. Not too dry and skin was tasty and crispy. Can eat like that without any dipping.

Our dinner plus drink only cost RM103, which was reasonable. Now we have a new place to have our dinner. 

Another round over here

We just could not get enough of dim sum so we had to go to Good Happiness Restaurant for its wonderful dim sum.

But maybe next time we would go on Saturday because it was pretty packed when we dropped by on Monday.  Monday was a replacement holiday for National Day. The food and drink were slow and we waited quite long for our order. Some more the 3 flavoured siew mai we had were not well cooked. :( Meat was uncooked.

Luckily the others were good, like this for instance. Steamed pork rib. Tender and tasty.

The steamed buns had never failed us.

First time we ordered this chicken's feet on that day. They were nice and I liked the spicy and sweet gravy.

This prawn spring rolls were also our first. We like them. Very crispy and prawns were fresh.

They went well with the spicy dippings.

Another first timer for us was this dumpling soup. The clear soup waa good, flavourish with not too much pepper and salt.

We had a pleasant breakfast irregardless of the tiny hiccups. We will definitely back for another round of dim sum. :)

We were here last weekend for a simple Chinese dinner. Thought the food was good the first time we were there so we came back for more of its dishes. 

I did not know what hubby ordered in the first place as I were busy with the baby. But when the food came after about 15 minutes of waiting, it had never surprised me that he ordered his favourite dish, ie sweet boneless pork chops. We quite liked them as the chops were tender and the sauce was not too sweet. Great dish to go with white rice.

Another family favourite. Claypot soft beancurd with mince and salted fish. Tasted good, and salted fish was not too overwhelming.

And we had its chai poh egg (dried turnip omelette). Tasted just as an omelette supposed to taste like.

Lastly was a vegetable dish. Yew chai cooked with fermented bean paste (fu chu).  Very big portion of vegetable but we enjoyed it anyway.

It was a pleasant dinner and not expensive at all. Plus 4 glasses of drink, the bill only came out RM48.10! So I only had 2 words to describe this place....CHEAP and GOOD!

That night, in history

Yesterday Sibu had the fiercest thunderstorm that I had ever encountered in my one year stay here. The wind was strong and gushing like mad and rain poured like nobody business!

I were caught in the rain. My daughter has her Kumon class so whether we liked it or not, we have to brace the rain and go out. So as usual I parked my car and waited for her since it is only an hour or less session. As we just left the car and still fighting with the strong wind in the shop walkway, suddenly we heard a loud bang behind us. First thought was something big fell down!

True enough, everyone from inside the shops watched in shock as a signboard fell down and hit few cars as it was torn into parts. Oh dear! I knew my car was hit as it was parked right under it! But I could not do much as rain still pouring and wind too strong to go under and brace the weather again.

But after we reached home I had to check on the car! The window cover was broken. Thinking of it, my girl was lucky and we were quicker by a minute to get out from car. Or she will definitely been hit as she got out from that left side of the car. Nothing serious to the car and we counted our lucky star that we escaped unhurt.

Most of the days we will have warm morning and afternoon and by late afternoon, we got rain or thunderstorm. As usual, within an hour rain, we will have flood on certain areas and caused massive jams. But not every evening we have wet and cold temperature. Like last Friday evening. The weather was so good and cooling after a shower. So we decided to check out this new place in town.

This cafe has been in existence for many months now but I did not read much review on the food. But that did not stopped me from going there. Thought the outlet looks decent to me from the road.

De' History Cafe is situated at one of the busiest road in city area and it is the corner shop behind the Petronas station. It is next to T-Time Coffee Shop. That night we were contemplating whether to eat at McD's or this corner cafe. In the end, we decided to try out the new place. Never try, never know, right? The worst, we never come back for it.

I wonder why the name as it was not aptly named. I don't see much decor signified the name other than the wall poster depicting the old corner shophouse but I guess name is not so important. It is the service and food that attracted you.

We were the early birds in the evening so they gave us their full attention. My only complaint was they should have baby chairs facility. But it was alright as SIL and I took turn to carry Jamie while we were eating.

Let's get on with our food.

I had its History Orange. Not your normal orange cordial. I liked it!

For dinner, I tried out its lamb chop rice in basil tomato sauce. Hubby would enjoyed this sauce. It was alright to me but they should gave 2 lamb chops instead of one. One chop was not enough! I did not really enjoyed the salad underneath the lamb chop. I would prefer mashed potato or some vegetables to go with the dish. Could not expect much for RM13.90, right?

The kids had its fish fillet with tartar sauce (RM15.90). The fillet was was good I had to admit. Dry and crispy. The kind my kids would enjoy.

My sil ordered The History Burger, which turned out to be interesting dish. A chicken burger with charcoal bun.

I thought it came with potato wedges which was my favourite but it turned out to be pineapple chunks! That was an unique ingredient in burger! RM13.90 for this burger!

Okay, this place will go down in my book of history as I would not be going back there. My bil has been jokingly saying I am currently on food hunting and tasting around Sibu. Putting my mark all over the places.  Good food under book of recommendation while bad ones in the book of history. Lol. 

I think I had enough of Western food for now. Am going back to home-cooked or local dishes soon. *wink* 

Rice and crackers

This place used to be called Terminal 5 Cafe (above Hua Yi Tang, in one of the shops that is the same stretch with Everwin supermarket in Jln Pahlawan) but not so sure when a change of ownership took place.  A new proprietor took over and re-named it S-Point. I am not so sure what "S" stands for. Maybe Sibu? Or something else.

It just happened that my sil knew the new proprietor when we went there the other night. Everything looked the same as I can remember. Been there only once last year. 

This cafe was nice for hangout and meet up but not much on the menu compared to the previous one before the new lady takes over. But good news is she has imported cold cuts like palma hams, pepperoni and salami. Must try out the salad one of these days. :)

We were early and their very first customers that night. So basically we had the whole place to ourselves. The kids were happy as it has air-con and free wifi. So they can played games and watched online movies without bothering me and my sil much.

Not much in their menu but noticed they have umai. Interesting dish to be served in such outlook!

Let's get on with our food. I ordered my usual drink, warm honey lemon.  Great for a chilling soul on a cold rainy night.

My SIL had its nasi lemak special, one of its signature dishes. Like the presentation. Look at the generous spread of fried anchovies and peanuts. I always prefer the little anchovies as they are crispier. This nasi lemak came with bbq chicken wing which was juicy. I know because my sil gave me her chicken wing. lol. RM6.90 only. Not too bad for such price.

The kids shared this grilled chicken rice at RM8.90. The chicken was alright. The only non-spicy dishes (under noodle and rice categories) that the kids can eat.

As for me, I had its tom yam seafood rice.  Taste wise it was good but not much ingredients. Few squid rings and a couple of prawns. RM9.90 for my meal.

Noticed something about the 3 dishes? Right, other than we ordered all rice meal, all our dishes came with crackers at the side. Must be the cafe's trademark. So, that is why this post is named as "rice and crackers". *wink* At least the kids enjoyed the crackers. No oil smell and they were pretty crispy.

We're looking forward to

Glad that August was over. It was a month of surprise and heart ache but everything is behind us now. I can't believe that September is here. There are few things that I am looking forward to this month.

My baby Jamie is going to be 1 year old this month. And as I mentioned before, my brother is getting married early this month. Finally! And we are going back to Kuching for the event. You can say, this big sista wouldn't miss this event for the world!! I just love weddings!  And this is extra special, as it involves my brother and I get the chance to take part in organising and helping around. (In other words, I can "kaypoh" around)

Marking 2 big dates in the calendar. 9th my brother's big day and 11th is my Jamie's birthday.   I have bought the return air flight back in February. Only RM834 for 5 of us as Air Asia had offer that time. And we are going to take family portrait too in Kuching. Yes, a studio family portrait to commemorate my 10th wedding anniversary.  Nice way to remember my anniversary, right?

So look forward to our one week holiday in Kuching.
