What do you cook to cool yourself down on this warm day??
Some day I made mung bean soup, other days, bird's nest soup. By now my family is bored with taking both drinks. So yesterday I cooked this barley and aloe vera drink.
A simple drink recipe. And not many ingredients used.
Barley
I harvested 4 leaves of aloe vera from the pot.
Quite tedious work to prepare and clean the aloe vera but it is not a difficult task once you are used to it.
How to prepare and clean aloe vera:
1. Cut the leaves thoroughly. Be careful with the yellow sap and if in contact with your skin, rinse and clean it thoroughly with soap and water.
2. Clean the leaves under running water.
3. Start with 1st leaf. Chop off the top part. Then cut off the serrated sides of the leaf by running down the knife along the leaf.
4. Run the knife on both back and front part of the leaf till you get the clear aloe vera.
5. Slice the aloe vera to small size. Do the same with other leaves till you get a cup of aloe vera gel.
6. Rinse few times to remove any aloe latex residue.

Ingredients:
Barley, soak in water and keep in fridge overnight
1 pandan leaf, tied in knot1 cup of aloe vera gel
Sone wolfberries (optional)
Rock sugar to taste
Water to boil
Methods:
1. In a pot of water, add in pandan and barley. Boil the barley till soft.
2. Once barley is cooked and soft, add in rock sugar. Let it boil for another 10 minutes before add in aloe vera and wolfberry (optional). Turn off the fire.
3. Serve warm or chilled.

I just boiled pandan leaves with mint added and add the aloe vera...plus a little bit of sugar. Very Very refreshing! Lazy to prepare the aloe vera though, a lot of work.

I've never prepare aloe leaf before so I don't know how tedious it is but from what I read it requires a lot of work hence the lazy part of me told me not to do it.
But I love to drink/eat aloe vera.
How can your family get bored of consuming bird's nest? OMG, that is like a once in a blue moon treat for us here so we'll never get bored of it.
Long time didn't cook all these drinks. Maybe I should harvest some aloe vera leaves to cook with barley.
Nutritious and healthy drink. Sometimes my mom will make barley drink too.

Sounds very refreshing but I am still hesitant about eating the aloe vera from my garden.
wahh, I have never cook both birds nest and also aloe vera soup. No confidence yet.
The idea of going out for a yummy brekkie would make me jump out of bed too!
