Go porridge

I was down with a virus on Friday. Had diarrhea and vomit so I stayed indoor most of the day and cooked white porridge to go with this. Hubby also joined me on porridge diet. lol.

We went for our breakfast in Cafe-Cafe and again hubby and I ordered its porridges.  I had its ikan bilis and peanuts porridge while hubby had minced meat with century egg porridge. RM5.80 per bowl that come with a small serving of kiam chai.

Warmer

Kids started their schools yesterday.  Everything went smoothly in the morning. Kids were eager to go back to schools. And Jamie gone to baby sitter while I had some times to myself in the morning clearing away the stuff and luggage bag that been there since we were back from Kapit.

It has been hot and stuffy for past week. No drop of rain at all. And I had a burst tyre yesterday afternoon when on my way to pick my girl. Fortunately my bil helped me with the new tyre while hubby helped to pick the girl from school. Thanks to the raging sun, my skin is definitely one tone darker!

Renewed passports this afternoon with hubby. Now passport fee is RM300 for 5 years. A lot people at immigration office and we queued up for more than an hour and then the system was down. So have to come back another day.

What a day! Wish for a smoother day tomorrow with cooler weather.

Kapit: I eat

When ever I visit Kapit, I must have Kapit's roti telur in the hawker market here. One of its kind, fried roti canai. Deep fried to perfection and come with sambal and curry dipping. RM2 for roti canai and RM3 for roti telur.

Cannot take it all the times. Very sinful food but since I only come back once in blue moon, cannot blame me for eating it. ;)

And another must eat food is my MIL's mee Brunei. Special sambal recipe that she learns from her sis that stayed in Brunei before. Love its fragrant sambal taste.

Weekend Menu #56: Two sides of snow fish

I love fishes.  Most fishes, steamed, stir fried, deep fried, shallow fried and cooked in soup.  They are nutritious and better than eating white meat.

Last week I bought 2 slices of snow fish (xue yu) from the wet market.  Is it called Cod fish in English. RM14.00 for 2 slices. I love snow fishes because the flesh are flaky and sweet.  Decided to cook my snow fish slices in 2 styles; ala pan fried and steamed.

For pan fried, it is very easy.  Just rinse and wipe the fish dry with kitchen towel then rub some sea salt and white pepper on the fish. Leave for 10 minutes before lightly coat with cornflour. Shallow fry in heated oil in pan till brown on both sides.

Love the crispiness of the skin.

Below is the recipe for steamed fish

Ingredients:
1 fish fillet
1 stalk spring onion, cut in 3cm length
1/2 tbsp salted plum
1/2 tbsp light soy sauce
5 slices of ginger, sliced
1 tomato, sliced into wedges
Salt to taste
2 tbsp water

Method:
1. Drizzle light soy sauce and water on the fish and place on deep plate.  Keep in fridge covered for 30 minutes (at least)
2. Scatter the rest of the ingredients on the fish and place onto steamer.
3. Steam on high heat for 10 - 15 minutes (depend on the thickness of the fish).

Sunday rant

We are back to Sibu. We came back yesterday afternoon. Hubby has stuff to look after in the office today so needed to be back yesterday.

I am happy that we are back as I would go crazy if stay one more day. There was no network Friday afternoon till we left yesterday. Totally disconnected from the world. Handphone cannot be used and so was the internet. Luckily the network coverage was back when we reached Sibu. I can't live without internet and phone coverage. *wink*

It was great holiday in Kapit. And the kids especially Jamie gets as much attention from everyone on his maiden trip back to hometown. He sure steal the limelight with all the guests with his cheeky smiles. :)

The kids would only be going to school next Wednesday so they have 2 more days to enjoy their holiday playing fireworks and fooling around.

On our table

We had a simple dinner at home on Thursday evening since only us and my in-laws.  BIL and SIL and family did not come back this year.

Ngoh hiang wrapped in lettuces are the only green we ate *wink*

Our menu for the reunion dinner.  Missing the vegetable dishes as MIL forgot to cook.  Lol! She had a tiring morning as still need to work in the canteen, so this year we did not have an extravagant menu list unlike previous year.  But I like my reunion dinner. Simple and home-y.  Let me introduce the food to you. *wink*

Herbal chicken - very tender and herbs tasted mild

This assortment of Chinese sausage, siew mai and roasted pork belly is from a famous seller in Kapit who has been making and selling this for years

Hubby's gu gu who made some ngoh hiang for us.  I love her ngoh hiang, very fragrant as she added some 5-spice in the meat

Nothing much to say about this lotus leaf pork trotter. The taste did not go into the meat, so rather plain

Abalone chicken soup, good for well being and skin! Lol! You know, who drank a lot yesterday...

The star of the dinner - empurau head, steamed.  Sweet and tender.

If you wonder how it looks like. This is the head before being chopped and steamed!
