Sorry, I somehow missed to post this but it is better to be late than never, right? 

Back to the time we spent in Kapit last month. On the day before we departed back to Kuching. Hubby brought us to this coffee shop, called Kampua Kiat Cafe. It belongs to one of hubby's classmates and since he had been telling us to visit him in his coffee shop, so we decided to do it before we left.

This Kampua Kiat coffee shop was the kids' favourite (as for Jan and Jay) as their grandpa used to bring them to have kampua for breakfast every time they were back to Kapit for year end holiday. So, you could said, the coffee shop guys knew my kids very well.

We parked our car at the Gelanggang Kenyalang where we had our roti canai goreng breakfast on the 2nd day. So it was not a very short walk and furthermore it was at one of the busiest street in the town, Jalan Tiong Ung Hong. But parking is a big problem in Kapit so if we found a parking, it was a blessing to take a walk to your desired destination.  Lol!

So, once we seated on 2 tables (due to SOP), hubby ordered the food from his friend. The coffee shop was packed with people, mind you, but we felt safe that time as Kapit was zero cases back then, before first case of Covid-19 came out sometime this month.

What do you think of the kampua? Authentic Foochow kampua? 

I did not tasted the kampua, but I took the dry pian sip. The dumplings in soy sauce were alright; meaty filling and skin wasn't thick, which I liked.  I did finished the whole thing myself.

I did not know how much was the breakfast as hubby's friend insisted not to charge us for it. Thank you so much for the treat.

Their version

On 2nd morning in Kapit, we went to this coffee shop for breakfast.

I liked the look of it. A little, old corner shop with vibrant colour. Kong Hua Cafe was the name of this shop.

While waiting for our food, I took shots of the stuff in the shop.

Don't you feel like you are back to the past?? Feel like the time has stopped and everything remaining the same in the past. 

Hubby insisted me to try their toast so we ordered a set to try. 

A Kaya and Peanut butter toast!! Tasty. I took one while Jan had the other half. 

Their kampua was finally here. Black soy for hubby while the others had the plain kampua. 

As for me, I tried their version of Sarawak laksa. A very unusual for me as they added innard in it. The broth wasn't the typical Sarawak laksa; more of the laksa curry to me. 

Did I enjoy it?? Not really. Not the typical Sarawak laksa. Even the broth tasted different. Well, at least I got to taste Sarawak laksa in Kapit this round. Better have a round of Sarawak laksa in Kuching soon to satisfy my craving. 

The market place

(First of all, I am wishing all my blogger friends and readers A Happy New Year. May 2021 be a much better year for everyone!!) 

Kapit market is a place to visit when you are in Kapit. You may find interesting stuff, jungle produces, exotic meats and something that only can be found in Kapit itself.

I always liked to visit the market place when I was back here, so this round was no exception. The only problem may be the parking. Not easy to find parking nearby and one may need to walk far. 

After our breakfast, we walked further down to Market Teresang and nearby stalls to digest our food and feed our eyes with what the market had to offer. Indeed, it never failed us.

We bought a container of kasam fish for my mum. This seller was well known as her kasam was good and she packed her kasam well in air tight container. My mum never tried fish made into kasam before. She used to take pork kasam in the past. I passed over the kasam to her on Monday. Hope she like it. 

Next morning

The next morning, we went to the hawker centre for breakfast.

8 something in the morning. Luckily we were able to find a parking right in front of the centre. 

I came for the fried roti telur, a local's favourite. Crispy and delicious big piece of roti telur.  A must-have when visiting this small town. 

We also ordered a plate of roti kosong for Jamie to try. Rounder piece compared to a squarer roti telur. 

Sweet sambal and slightly spicy curry dippings to go with the roti. RM11 for 2 plates of roti telur and 1 roti kosong. 

Usually we came for roti telur everytime we were back to Kapit but this round, the boys also get to taste the kampua from one of the stalls. Rm3.50 for this kampua. 

Hubby had this fried noodle for RM4. Look like Foochow version of fried noodle with slices of liver and meats. 

First dinner

Continue my post on my short family holiday in Kapit.

We were hungry when we entered Kapit on Monday evening. So we headed straight to this coffee shop which was a minute drive from my in-laws' house. 

Hubby ordered 4 dishes for our dinner. First was this soft tofu mixed vegetable dishes. 

Then stir fried midin which was alright but big portion. 

The sweet and sour soup was tasty. Or maybe we were hungry so everything tasted nice. 

They have the deep fried pork trotter so we had one as well. Big trotter!! But it was nice; skin was crispy and meat wasn't too hard and dry. 

There was another dish which was onion omelette but I did not take shot of it. RM150 plus drinks for our first dinner in Kapit. 

Whenever

The last time we were back in Kapit was in 2015 during the school holiday. Last week, we spent 3 days there for the Ching Ming. Did not go anywhere as it was a short stay and hubby and I both fell sick. 

Most of the time, we were in my in-laws' hospital canteen for meals.  No complaint since everything was on them!  The drinks, the food.  The kids get to take whatever they want.  Lol!

On the day of our departure, we had a chance to try out the nasi lemak. Never try the nasi lemak before, so sick or no sick, I would not want to miss the chance to taste it. My MIL sells it for RM5.00 but I am not sure what is the normal portion. Definitely not a whole hard-boiled egg and fried chicken!

We helped ourselves to the rice and ingredients and this was how my plate of nasi lemak turned out. Love the fragrant coconut rice as well as the salted fishes. The sambal was nice too; sweet and spicy at the same time.

Of course whenever you come to Kapit, one must try its local food such as kampua, pian sip, chicken feet soup, my MIL's Mee Brunei and most distinctive dish would be the deep-fried roti telur in the hawker market.

And the little sight-seeing around the busy town especially the interesting Market Teresang and historical Fort Sylvia. 

We kind of missing the slow paced and quietness of Kapit town when we left that day. Not sure when we would be back or would we ever be back again. Maybe the next time we come back here, it would be by road. Waiting for the new road to be complete then. Till then, goodbye Kapit.

This green corner shop

After  our market walk, we went further by foot into the town centre and came to this green corner shop.

Hiap Chiong Cafe is the name and besides the coffee shop, they also operate inn upstairs.

This is the name of the road that the shop is situated at. The coffee shop is rather interesting as its front is a mini grocery shop cum eatery.

The kitchen is at the back which occupied a very small space. 

Not only this coffee shop is distinctively painted in green, it grows potted plants at the side of the walkway.

Talking about walkway, the owner fully use the walkway for tables and chairs so you would need to walk outside to go through the shop.

One thing about eating in Kapit that I learnt is that the food here is very pricey. So we mostly eat in my mil's canteen.

 

But this rare occasion, we had a chance to taste the local food, which is mostly influenced by Hokkien and Foochow. I did not mind sitting at the walkway of the shop waiting for my breakfast.

I did not want to eat fried noodle so I ordered hung ngang soup. It served pork slices, with few earwoods, green vegetable and salted mustard. Tasted bland to me as lack of salted vegetable and I prefer fish in my hung ngang.

The others had plate of fried noodle each. Looked good to me. 

And not forgetting its chicken feet soup. Tasty soup. Must drink while it is warm.

This was the only time I ate outside my mil's canteen. Hardly venture much this round and I were down with flu and not well in middle of my holiday. Maybe too much wild boars and durians. Lol.

And then there was the market

One must visit Kapit wet market when you are here. There is much to see and buy; and you'll be amazed by what you witness there.

I have been to Kapit many times but embarassingly to say, I have been to its wet market once prior to my last visit. So it was an overdue visit for me.

We had a short tour in the market one morning. Very intriguing and eye opener if you asked me. One could find local produces, souvenirs and crafts there. My kids being city dwellers were gawked looking at those lived and dead animals.
