The sweet cake

Nian gao (Chinese New Year cake) or ti kuih (sweet cake) is popularly served on Chinese New Year as it symbolised success and togetherness. Eat this sweet cake snack with tea as it is sweet and sticky.

This is how I fry my nian gao. I made some on the 6th day of CNY for breakfast for everyone.

Ingredients:
300g nian gao, sliced in uniform
5 tbsp plain flour, sifted
2 eggs, beaten
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
Cooking oil

Methods:
1. Prepare the nian gao.
2. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, egg, and salt till consistent and smooth.
3. Dip nian gao in the batter one by one and into a heated pan with oil.

4. In low fire, fry each side till slightly golden brown.
5. Bite into nian gao while it is warm.

I learnt a short cut way to cook nian gao without having to fry it and making the kitchen oily.. They put nian gao pieces in ready-made puff pastry and bake in the oven.. Taste good too :)

You pan fry them. My mom always deep fry them but this year I got none of this. Sobs.

I wrapped in popiah skin and baked instead of deep frying. Nice but I am not all that crazy over nian gao.
