Peel or no peel?


I love Chinese steamed buns, especially char siew bun and meat bun with egg in the filling. But buns no longer that cheap nowadays. It could cost over RM2 or even higher.

Recently I tasted vegetable bun at my dad's shop where he bought from the market on the way to work. I never tasted a vegetable bun before till that morning. Surprisingly it reminded me of "chai kueh" with the fillings of beancurds, carrots and chestnuts. 

I usually peel the outer skin of the bun before I eat it. I know some do that but some don't. So, do you peel or don't peel the skin of the steamed buns before you eat them??

My missus would peel, not me. I actually like the smooth skin on the outside.

Just got to know that your dad is a restaurant owner from this entry. I love vegetables bun especially the one that sells in Satok area near Thomson Corner. But yes, it ain't cheap anymore. The price of drinks is ridiculously high. So i usually go for plain water.

We have the same habit of peeling out the bun skin before eating. Sadly, i can't explain why I did so. What about you? Do u know why u peel off the skin? Hahaha!

Hi Willie. My dad is not a restaurant owner. Haha. He owns a shop but not a restaurant.

I used to eat everything when I were young but I heard from a colleague where I worked that the bun skin may not be hygienic to be eaten. So since then I peel my bun skin. Influenced by her. Lol. But I think it is fine. Our body can withstand any germs or dust. Lol.

Most of the time I don't peel, either is lazy or I feel that after peeling, the bun will become much smaller LOL

My hubby will peel and will insist for me to peel for the boys. As for me, I just eat it like that. Malas lah, after peeling for them, by the time it is my turn, I stuffed everything into my mouth :D

I don't peel until my friend asked me to peel so nowadays I peel them if I buy them from coffee shops and the bao is not hot any more but if the bao is piping hot, then I do not peel because the heat would have killed the germs. For nice restaurants where they serve the bao piping hot, I don't peel.

I will peel off the bao skin for the baos I buy from the shop as I am not sure about the handling process of the baos..I have seen some shops just leave them open unattended and many of their workers handle them before putting them into the steamer..so better be safe the sorry.

I always peel the skin of steamed buns. But if homemade ones, I do not peel.

Since small I was told to peel but later on I did not. If the stall handle it hygienically, like using tongs, it should be ok to eat without peeling.

Normally I do unless as PH said, if they are clean, I just put them in my mouth...hahaha

Sometimes I peel, sometimes I don't. Depends how 'white' it looks ..lol!!

In the earlier years, all the dim sum chefs used their mouth-filled-water to spray onto the trays of bao dumplings before steaming! My God Mother really saw it with her own eyes and you might find it in old You-Tubes. But these days, many have used the hygienic way of using spray pumps to squirt water to moist them. However, we are not sure which chefs are still using their filthy mouths.

My mom used to have a restaurant and one our specialty is siopao. We peel off the buns since siopao is usually left out in the open for the flour to raise when its made and because its sticky, dust amd other stuff usually sticks on. Also, in handling the pao for preparation it sometimes can't be helped for people to touch it. So for sanitary purposes, we peel it off. Its also the advice of our dimsum chef.
