First post of 2023!! How did you celebrate your New Year?? For me, we went to my parents' house for a potluck lunch. Everyone prepared some food and not only that, my brother rented an inflatable bounce castle cum water pool for the younger kids to play in. So, a big splash party in the pool while the adults were busy eating and looking after them yesterday. Lol.
Back to my KL holiday, from Kafei Dian, my sis and bil brought us to the nearby lane and street. The Chinatown of Kuala Lumpur was just a walk away.
We reached this well known picturesque back alley in Jalan Panggung called Kwai Chai Hong. Cantonese translation of "Little Ghost Lane" or "Little Demon Alley". An almost century old lane, with numerous murals depicting the daily life at this place in the old days. The glory of KL Chinatown back in the 1960s was revived to bring visiors a peek view of its golden era. Opening hours is daily from 9am to 12am.
A status of a lady greeted you at the entrance to the lane. Believed that it depicted the prostitute as vice activities were common in Kwai Chai Hong back then.
Luckily the rain has stopped so it was easier for us to take some photos in the lane while enjoying the beauty of this newly refurbished tourist attraction in KL.
My brother-in-law (in black shirt in photo below) who is a professional photographer, took few shots of us here. Free photography session with him. Lol! You can check his profile and works here. Anyone interested, can directly contact him for photography service in KL areas.
After Kwai Chai Hong, we walked further to another well known street. Petaling Street!! Alas, the rain has started again, but luckily for the roof, otherwise a very wet walk for us in Petaling Street. We did not buy anything there but went to the famous Air Mata Kucing stall for its refreshing drink.
Petaling Street no longer the same, unlike back in the 1990s. Mostly Chinese vendors and visitors, speaking Cantonese. Now, the vendors were mostly foreigners!! Bangladeshi I believed, now mending the stalls.
That's it. A Chinatown tour with my sis and bil. We headed back to KLCC via train, and they took us back to our apartment by car. Thank you sis and bro for the lovely lunch, catching up and tour. See you this coming CNY in Kuching!!
Yea, petaling street no longer the same anymore. I hardly go there now, coz nothing to buy. Kwai chai hong is the only attraction there.
ReplyDeleteA splash party? That sounds exciting! No photo of you in your bikini? LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteI loved Jalan Petaling in the mid-80's when I was in KL for a year. Loved the beef noodles there...and all the nice things to eat. Hardly ever went there after they revamped the place to make it nicer with a roof and all, like India Street in Kuching - somehow it was not the same anymore.
Sounds like that you had a great celebration with your family, Rose. Have a fantastic week ahead!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fun area to explore. One of my favourites in KL.
ReplyDeleteGosh! I have not been to Petaling Street for so long! I used to go there during my student days whenever I go to the Rex cinema. Now the cinema pub already extinct.
ReplyDeleteWonderful new year celebration and for the kids a splashing celebration. I would love to visit the kwai chai hong.
ReplyDeleteWah, your new year gathering with food to celebrate sounds good. You tour petaling street with so nice photos! I haven't been to those places you described yet.
