Now Kuchingites can enjoy the famous Melacca's chicken rice balls in this eatery named Onn Cake House Melaka Favourite. Located near to Hainan Street Restaurant in RH Plaza, Jln Lapangan Terbang (at the back side where Four Points Hotel is), this place serves Melacca's local cuisine namely Nyonya dishes and it has the famous Melaka chicken rice balls, Melaka cendol, Nyonya chang and ayam ponteh.
I tasted the chicken rice balls many many years ago during my maiden and only holiday in Melaka. So if you asked me how the balls tasted like, I honestly tell you I could vague remember it at all.
It has been a while since I were here. Since moved to my current home, I seldom come to RH Plaza area for food. So I were happy to give this place a try few afternoons ago.
I am not sure who is this Onn and why it is named a cake house since there was not a single cake around. Definitely the place does not look like a bakery to me.
The shop was quite small with not many tables. The lady (I assume she is the taukeynio) is friendly and helpful in explaining her menu.
And I did some research later and discovered that there was an Onn Cake House in RH Plaza selling local kuihs and pastries. I believe they expanded their food business and selling more choices for their customers.
The shop is open daily (except Tuesday) from 9.30am to 9.00pm.
Okay, we came here for its chicken rice so here was how my plate looked like. RM8.00 per plate. Expensive right?? Two chicken rice balls. However two is definitely enough for me. If you want extra rice ball, it would be RM1 per ball.
The rice balls were nice, soft but not that oily. Not as flavourful like in other chicken rice shops but I love the chilli dipping. Very spicy for me. The chicken was alright. Not dry and they come in very chunky pieces.
Overall the chicken rice was nice. Not a disappointment.
However, I would highly recommend their so-called Melaka cendol. Super delectable and sweet, with hints of coconut milk, fresh milk and palm sugar. RM3.50 each.

Melaka cendol
The cendol does resemble our local ais kacang, ang tau chian luk (Hokkien for red beans with green cendol). Does Melaka cendol look like this? Or they localised the cendol to fit our local taste?
Initially the lady recommended their durian cendol but I said no as I did not want durian in my cendol. The lady assured me they would not add durian if I did not want to. So I got my normal Melaka cendol. You know me, never into sweet food and this cendol is not too sweet! Just right. Love it to max!
Now, a visit to this shop has satisfy my curiosity. No need to go so far to Melaka to have a taste of Melaka cuisine any more. *wink wink*
Same here, I also only eaten chicken rice balls for 1 or 2 times only.. I can't really remember the taste, I only remember the texture a bit chewy and sticky.. Not like usual chicken rice texture..
ReplyDeleteI have been wanting to visit Malacca for some time but haven't have the chance yet. I would go for the durian cendol. I have tasted once before and I loved it.
ReplyDeleteI know the place very well - stayed at Four Points a few times. I may have walked past this shop but never tried. So many places to go and eat in that area.
